In a growing child a small lower jaw can be corrected by means of an orthopedic
treatment. This treatment tries to increase the growth of the lower jaw and
sometimes decrease the growth of the upper jaw so that a proportional balance can be
achieved between them.
In non growing adolescents and adults the discrepancy between the jaws can be only
corrected by means of a surgical treatment where the lower jaw is moved forward. In
some cases an orthodontic only treatment is available to camouflage the problem by means
of dental extraction in the upper jaw only so that the front teeth can be moved back to
where the small jaw is.
