Dental Crowding is the most common problem people have
that makes them decide to have Orthodontic Treatment. Most of the time is just a
matter of heredity, getting Dad's big teeth and Mom's small gums. Sometimes early
extraction of baby teeth, without the use of a space maintainer, can also lead to dental
crowding.
There are two basic ways to deal with Dental Crowding in Orthodontics:
Increasing the size of the gums:
Expanding the Dental Arch sideways, or pushing the Molars back to open more space.
Reducing the size or the number of teeth:
Dental extraction of some teeth, or the reduction in size of the teeth by Dental Stripping
can also open more space to correct crowding.
Younger kids tend to respond better to expantion of the gums, whereas late teens and
adults are most commonly treated by extraction of teeth. That is why is better to
take your children early if you notice a crowding problem.
