Posterior Cross Bite

Normaly the upper teeth are in front of the lower teeth both in the front and on the
sides of the bite. Some times the upper jaw can be narrower than the lower resulting
in a Posterior Cross Bite where in one or both sides the upper molars bite inside the
lower molars. This can be corrected by widening the upper jaw with an orthopedic
expander or in the case of an adult by surgicaly correcting the width of the upper jaw.
If the cross bite involves the front teeth we have a situation known as an underbite
or Anterior Cross Bite. This is very tipical in cases of excesive growth lower jaws
and can requier surgery to correct. If treated early orthopedicaly in a child with
no family history of excesive jaw growth most of the time it can be corrected without
surgery. Some cases are do to simple dental causes and respond extreemly well to
orthodontic treatment.
